Shared hosting usually uses a web-based manage panel program such as cPanel or one of many other manage panel items. Most of the large web hosting organizations use their own custom developed manage panel. Manage panels and web interfaces can cause controversy nevertheless, since internet hosting companies sometimes sell the right to use their manage panel system to others. In shared web hosting, the provider is usually responsible for managing servers, installing server software, security updates, technical assistance, and other aspects of the service. Most servers are dependent about the Linux operating system and LAMP which is driven by the low price of open source software. But some providers offer Microsoft Windows-based or FreeBSD-based solutions. For example, the Plesk and Ensim manage panels are both available for two operating systems, Linux and Windows. Versions for either OS have really similar interfaces and functionality, with the exception of OS-specific differences (for instance: ASP.NET, SQL Server and Access support under Windows; MySQL under Linux).
