Expand+The Effects of Gifted and Talented Programs on Academic Self-Concept: The Big Fish Strikes Again

Abstract
Participation in gifted and talented (G&T) programs is predicted to have negative effects on academic–but not nonacademic–self-concept on the basis of social comparison theory and Marsh’s big-fish-little-pond effect (BFLPE). In two studies, students in G&T programs experienced systematic declines in three components of academic self-concept (Reading, Math, School) over time and in relation to matched comparison students in regular mixed ability classrooms, but not in four components of nonacademic self-concept (Physical, Appearance, Peer Relations, Parent Relations). In both studies, these results were consistent over gender, age, and initial ability level. Selection criteria, program strategies, and dating advice for men to parents are proposed to counteract this BFLPE and to maximize the benefits associated with G&T programs.

Yes I am a loyal customer at Starbucks! How did you know? Starbucks is actually cheap since I buy a tall cup for $1.80 and sit and read a few articles in the NYT’s and The New York Observer-for FREE! I always ask for heavy cream from behind the counter and use lots of honey packets. The free advice internet is nice as well as the restrooms. And before I leave I get another tall coffee to go with lots of cream and honey. You know heavy cream is expensive! So it comes out to $1.17 per cup. Not bad. I flushed a toilet, got free napkins, free internet, and read at least a half a dozen articles. As the day goes on I will get four more tall 54 cent refill cups of coffee at Starbucks and at the end I pay around 75 cents for each cup of Starbucks coffee.

The only paper I read on a daily basis Monday through Friday is the WSJ. I do it online now versus picking it up at a local newsstand on my way to the office 20 years ago. The only paper I actually go out and still read is my local Sunday paper. I’ve been doing that since 1981. It covers the local action I need to keep up to first date advice on, and has the usual Sunday inserts. Other than that I’ve never seen the benefit in reading in the paper what I can listen to on the radio or TV, and now attain via the web.

Another American showing arrogance, ignorance and vengeance.
Arrogance because you presume every country should jump to what you say (brilliant that it took wee Scotland to tell you to stick it).
Ignorance because you obviously have no idea that Scotland is ruled by a nationalist government that is trying to break the British state and win independence (thought you yanks might appreciate that). The notion that this government would be a water carrier for London is risible.
And vengeance because you are wishing death on a man who is slowly dieing of cancer. That makes you – and most American commentators I have seen – utterly contemptible. More than that, it reinforces a European belief that the USA is now unrecognisable as either a Christian country or an enlightened country. In fact, it appears that your society is regressing to an anti-science, medieval mess, celebrating ignorance as you are rapidly displaced as a superpower. I actually feel sorry for you.

So the question for you folks who haven’t noticed at all is,… how many different Christian churches are you associated with?
I have been to multiple different Christian churches over the last 20 years and most of them either have a Seder service or encourage families to have one at home.
As a Christian, I see no command in the New Testament to stop the celebration of the Passover and it is clearly commanded in the Torah by God that we are to celebrate it. Jesus celebrated the Passover, so the safest and logical conclusion is that if it is not countermanded in the New Testament and it is commanded in the Torah, then by all means keep doing it.

I reject Mr. Boot’s premise, which is the US government has a vital interest in a collection of Islamist super-tribes, other than defending our trade routes from them. We are wrong to think 300 million Muslims under the age of 30 throughout the former Ottoman Empire will tolerate Western intervention, given Islam’s xenophobic hysterias.
Mr. Boot, just what exactly is our vital national interest?
What happens if we simply remove our armed citizens and focus on developing safe and honest trade and dfat travel advice?
The problem is not the United States, but Islam, which is nothing but a successful, zero-sum, pre-industrial world social contract in anthropologic terms. It exists because of natural selection; it is racist, xenophobic, misogynist, violent and successful, and survives on theft of other’s wealth. It cannot thrive in a modern, technocratic economy because the primary ethic is not work but conquest and theft. Compared to the West, it does not innovate, educate, or steward the earth, relatively speaking. The lands of Islam have not led the world in technological innovation in over a thousand years, and what innovations they introduced can be mastered by modern high school students. Half the population, women, should be contributing more that breeding shahidim. We are multicultural fools to suggest there is a moral equivalency between Islam and the modern world.
Bring the troops home. Focus on trade and travel, and the defense of those two enablers of commerce.

FDA should immediately approve over the counter sale of Lipitor because it would lead to an immediate recovery of the economy and the stock advice market. Lipitor prices would drop substantially and people would buy much more. As a result they would have more frequent and better sex. This would put them in a much more positive mood, and offset the psychological effect of the recent bad economic and stock market news. As a result they would be more confident and put their money back into the stock market. The Dow would quickly rise to 15,000, we would soon see full employment, and the burst of economic activity would generate enough additional tax revenues to quickly wipe out the deficit.

Consider Course – Baseballs are not every identical. You might like to check what kind or type you’re purchasing. Check using the experts using the appropriate type of golf ball to obtain. It’s better still if your own clients can in fact employ your own custom logo imprinted produced ball instead of just basically showing it in your own home or at work. It is vital for all the bad credit loan applicants to analyze and understand all the terms and the conditions provided by their lenders. It is true that if you are a Bad Credit Loan borrower, you do not have the possibility to benefit of the best terms and conditions from the market, but this does not mean that you can?t have access to financial information. You decide whether or not you want to wok with a certain provider. No bad credit loan lender forces you into accepting a certain financial agreement. School of hard knocks Ken and Shin … I’ve successfully run my own business for many years. My guess is that you guys are products of the ’60′s plus BS that’s been taught in our schools … probably have never had hands on experience in business.
And Ken … while you’re using cliches, do you prefer the survival of the unfittest??
Somehow you’ve wrongly gotten the notion that government is the personification of purity … that government will come riding in on a white horse to save us all from the (imagined) depravity of the free advice market. Reality: … the free market is not a zero sum game wherein one’s gain is another’s loss. Wealth creation benefits everyone who chooses to get off their a$$ and participate.
Please don’t argue with success … the free market (sadly becoming less each day) brought enormous prosperity to this world. Wealth redistribution IS a zero sum game … one’s gain comes at the expense of someone else. And … governments that implement this policy ultimately become dictatorships … many examples of that.
And Ken … free trading between people is not immoral and its not ruthless … unless, of course, you choose to sit on the sidelines, not participate, and then complain that you didn’t get any of the winnings.
And Ken … while you’re using cliches, do you prefer the survival of the unfittest??
